When it comes to family holidays, the expectations tend to be high. Unfortunately, a common scenario is that everyone returns needing another holiday to get over the stress. Thankfully, there are things you can do to reduce the stress levels and ensure everyone has a great time.

    Choose the Right Accommodation

Accommodation comes in a variety of disguises, but the perfect type for a family holiday is something that provides self-catering options. Greece holidays with the family, for example, will be far more enjoyable if there’s no pressure when it comes to feeding the family. Being able to eat what you all want, when you want to and not being forced to sit at a table waiting for food to arrive can be a huge relief for both kids and parents. Choosing a villa holiday also means you’re not all crammed into a hotel room. When the kids are asleep, there’s space for Mum and Dad to chill and relax without worrying about disturbing them.

    Be Flexible

While it’s nice to have a routine when you’re at home, don’t be afraid to let things slide a little when you’re on holiday. Don’t stress about getting back for mealtimes or worry about making bedtimes later than normal.

Don’t Try to Squeeze in Too Much

When you’re on holiday, the temptation is to try to fit as much in as humanly possible. There will be so many new places to see, people and cultures to experience that you risk sensory overload if you don’t try to restrict what you’re doing. Not only that, being on the go, rushing here and there only results in grouchy kids and stressed out parents.

    Everyone Should Enjoy the Holiday

Try to remember that you’re all on holiday and there has to be some downtime for Mum and Dad too. While it’s important to keep the kids as occupied as possible, there also has to be some experiences for you to enjoy. Fit in a day of culture or at the very least, take it in turns watching the kids so that you get to do things you want to do, such as enjoying a spa or walking around the local market.

A Suitcase Full of Toys isn’t Necessary

If your kids are young, a suitcase full of toys is going to keep them occupied for long. Since you’re on Vacation, try to do something different for their entertainment. Bring along some paper, glue, scissors and coloured paper and let them be creative. A small box of Lego shouldn’t take up too much space in a suitcase, and there’s always the option of downloading some TV shows, movies or their favourite games onto a tablet. They might appreciate lounging around and watching something when they’ve had enough of splashing around in the pool.
