Carne Con Papas (Cuban Beef Stew) recipe
By now you can probably tell two things about my cooking 1. I love cooking Cuban Food & 2. I love using the crockpot. This recipe is no exception! Great for cold winter days or can be the perfect fix-it and forget it meal. This recipe reminds me of when I was little and I would go over to my grandmother’s house and she would be cooking a giant pot of Carne con papas. Because we lived in Miami the weather wasn’t cold but it was definitely comforting food.
Carne con Papas is a Cuban dish that is truly comfort food. You can find this on the menu any given night in a Cuban’s home. It’s very easy to make and includes the basics of Cuban ingredients. The Cuban ingredients in every home are Green peppers, garlic, onions, and Sazon Goya. Like any Ethnic recipe, everyone’s recipe is always the best. However, everyone’s recipe can vary significantly. This one is a variation of the recipe my grandmother used to make tailored to our busy lifestyle.
It’s a very easy recipe and just like my crockpot arroz con pollo
What you will need to make Carne Con papas
- 2 lbs stew type beef
- 1/2 cup oil (I use olive oil)
- 2 bay leaf
- 1 onion
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1 green pepper
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 2 lbs potatoes
- 1 cup dry wine (most times white is used but for this recipe, I like it with red)
- 2 packages of Goya seasoning
- 1 cup water
Like I said above everyone cooks this recipe differently because well, that’s what happens with any ethnic meal.
Most recipes are passed down by word of mouth and some are never written down just spoken to from mother to daughter. That being said the taste is always the same no matter how you look at it when made with the same delicious ingredients.
To make this delicious comfort food I basically chop and mix everything together in the crockpot and cook on high for 3-4 hours.
I use Sazón Goya for seasoning (This is found at most Walmarts across the country but you can order it online or use Culantro & Achiote spices as well as salt and pepper). I’ve lived in many states like Kansas , Connecticut, and Pennsylvania and have always found it, however ordering online can help solve that problem 🙂
This seasoning gives this meal a delicious taste. Finally, I simply Fix and forget!

Hi! It would have been a better recipe if only 1/2 a cup of red wine is used and other ingredients are missing like cumin, bouillon. Etc. thank you 😊

Hola! I love all of your Cuban slow cooker recipes. I am a full time teacher and single mom of two boys AND I just recently added on a second part-time job. So, I am learning to use my crock pot a lot more. I have saved all of your Cuban recipes for the slow cooker (Arroz con Pollo, Fricase de Pollo, y Carne con Papas), but I was not able to find one for Ropa Vieja. If you have this recipe, please send me the link. Also, did I miss any other Cuban Slow Cooker recipes you may have posted? Muchisimas Gracias!!! 🙂
