Preparing Your Dog for the Arrival of Your New Baby

Baby Doll: Consider buying a baby doll and acting like it’s the new baby. Mimic playing and talking to baby. When your dog acts well around the doll, reward them.

Go on Walks with Stroller: I know it sounds weird walking with an empty stroller, but it works! Taking your stroller out when you walk will get your dog used to the stroller being by them. This can help later when the baby is in the stroller that your dog will act calm and relaxed. Just don’t wrap leash around handles or stroller. This can cause an accident if your dog tries to chase something.

Baby Items: Make sure to introduce baby items to your pup. Blankets, diapers, clothes, etc. Let them get the smell of the baby items so they are used to them and not that interested once baby is here. It is good to place any bassinets, rockers, swings out as well, so your dog can get used to them.

Baby Smell: If possible, once baby arrives  have a family member drop a piece of baby clothing by the house before you come home. This way your dog can smell the item and get used to the new smell.

Chew Treats: If your dog loves chewing get some new toys or dog bones for when baby is home. It is a great way to keep your dog busy and they feel special for getting a treat.
