Find out how I make the perfect Cuban Breakfast that includes a Guava Pastry (pastelitos de guayaba) recipe.
Guava Pastry Recipe (Pastelitos de Guayaba)
Guava Pastries are a staple in the Cuban household. Growing up in Miami there wasn’t a day I could run to the local bakery and grab some delicious It’s a delicious treat I love to indulge in when I visit Miami. They are so popular in our home that whenever I visit Florida I love to bring different kinds of Cuban pastries with me. That being said I can’t always visit Miami so that’s why I love making these delicious pastries. I didn’t realize how easy they were to make and best of all how easy it is to find the ingredients.
That’s why I’ve put this fun recipe that’s easy to make and so delicious!! So head below to check it out for yourself!
What you’ll need to Make Guava Pastries
Guava paste
Puff Pastry Sheets
Egg
1/2 Cup of Sugar
1/2 Cup of Water
How to make Guava Pastries
To begin, Brew yourself a delicious Café Bustelo, make sure and add milk and sugar! This is a must when making Pastelitos Cubanos 🙂
Then pick up Guava Paste and Puff Pastry sheets. You can find the Guava Paste in the Latin section in Target
Preheat Oven to 400 degrees
Place the Puff Pastry Sheet on parchment paper on a cookie sheet.
Slice the Guava
And place on the sheet
(Optional) add cream cheese on top of the guava : This will make it even more amazing, seriously…this flavor combination is gold!
Cover with the other Puff Pastry sheet
Cut the Pastry into squares and add some slits at the top. This is important because if not it will puff up and not get that pastelito look.
Add an egg wash(1 egg mixed with a teaspoon of water) before placing in oven.Bake for 30-35 minutes
Remove from oven and add a simple syrup wash over it (1/2 cup of sugar + 1/2 cup of water, bring to a boil and use a brush to brush it over the pastries) Cook at 400 for 5 minutes more.
And voila, PURE Deliciousness!!!

One of my favourite pastries. I would do the drive to a cuban bakery and a cup of coffee. Followed your recipe with the cream cheese; of course. They were delicious. I wish I would have bought more puff pastry. They didn’t last a day in my home. It’s a game changer.
Just made these and they were perfect. I used mascarpone instead of cream cheese.
