Becoming a mother doesn’t mean that ambition suddenly takes a back seat. It does however mean that we change our priorities and for some of us that means putting our own goals and careers on the back seat while we raise our families, at least for a while.
But now, women all over America are discovering that returning to work and personal goals that might have been iced for a period, is becoming more realistic, and educational institutions are rising to meet the challenge.
While mature student status in Europe has long been a part of their traditions, certainly in countries like the United Kingdom and the Scandanavian region where lifelong and ongoing education is not just encouraged, but supported by business and the public sector too.
This means that for many American moms, as our children get older and become more independent, many of us are choosing to either go back to school to complete our educations or embark on entirely new avenues of study.
While this is an exciting and potentially life-changing experience, there are a few noteworthy points that we’d like to share with you, nevertheless.
Finding the Right School
Even though it can be something of a challenge to find the right school for mature students in the United States, more and more colleges are rising to the challenge as they begin to recognize the value that the life experiences an older student can bring to the college lecture hall.
Many colleges have also revolutionized their online learning resources and availability to reach this rising demand, so if you are burning with ambition but attending full-time classes is not the right option for you, do some research in this area, you’re likely to find a school that works for you.
There are so many different types of online classes available. You can even do an online healthcare administration degree ,if you choose. Learning for any degree is easy to do at your own pace when you take an online class.
Choosing a Major
So, you’ve decided to go back to school, you’ve run the numbers and you can make it work. What are you going to study? Many moms have found that their ambitions change over time and what was realistic before raising a family may not be the right option at this particular moment in time.
However, what you may find is that life itself has prepared you for a career or study path that you may not have thought about before. A psychology major features high on the list of educational pathways for many moms returning to study because it slots in great with life experience and when you tailor that major to focus on your interests be it with children or elderly people, then you can draw on your life experience and combine it with your education.
Funding
As with most great plans and goals in life, finding ways to make these goals work for us financially is always going to be part of the plan. Continuing education, while a challenge is not out of your reach with some good planning. Life has prepared you for this already because managing the household checkbook is a skill in and of itself. You may even find that being more mature has equipped you with the necessary skills to handle entering education at an older age than your fellow students.
