Free Fall Things to do With Kids in your Own Backyard
Does the Autumn air call to you each year? Begging you to come outside and play all day? Take advantage of the cooler weather and the changing colors by getting in some great activities outdoors with your children. The best part is you can use these 5 free fall things to do with kids in your own backyard as a kickstart for other fall activities.
Having fun in your own backyard doesn’t have to cost a thing! Here are some free fall activities you can do with kids right in your backyard:
Bark rubbings
I bet you already have all the supplies you need for this one. You will need a crayon, a sheet of paper, and a tree. See? Simple. Go outside to your favorite tree, taking your paper and crayon with you. Hold the sheet of paper against the bark. With the side of the crayon rub the paper so that color is transferred. The pattern of the bark will come through onto the paper. You can also do this with leaves by placing single leaves on a flat surface and covering them with paper.
Nature Scavenger Hunt:
Create a list of fall-themed items for the kids to find in the backyard, such as acorns, colorful leaves, pinecones, etc. Make it a nature scavenger hunt and see who can find everything first.
Family Campfire
Gather some rocks and create a fire ring in your yard if you don’t already have one. Wait for darkness to start creeping into your backyard and then light a cozy campfire. For extra fun, the whole family can wear their pajamas while you roast marshmallows and tell stories.
Leaf Identification
Take a quick trip to your local library and check out a book about local plants. Use the books to identify trees and other plants on your property. If you’re feeling especially academic take along a notebook and teach your little naturalists how to write observations about what they see. This activity is fun and educational.
Leaf Pile
This is kind of a cliché autumn activity but hear me out. Before you and your kids make the most epic leaf pile ever you can teach them about acts of service. Gather rakes, wheelbarrows, and big black trash bags, and then set out into your neighborhood to volunteer to rake leaves for others. Once you’ve raked a few yards take all the leaves back to your own yard and you’ll have a leaf pile or monstrous proportions.
Outdoor Picnic:
Pack a simple picnic lunch or snacks, grab a blanket, and have a picnic in the backyard. Enjoy the crisp fall air while having a meal together.
Nature Art
Use leaves, sticks, and other natural materials to create art pieces in the backyard. It could be leaf rubbings, stick sculptures, or even a nature collage.
Backyard Camping:
Set up a tent or build a fort with blankets and pillows for a backyard camping adventure. Tell stories, stargaze, and have a mini camping experience.
Apple Bobbing
Fill a bucket with water and apples, and let the kids try apple bobbing. It’s a classic fall activity that kids enjoy.
Outdoor Movie Night:
If you have a projector or a big screen, set up an outdoor movie night. Let the kids watch a favorite fall-themed movie under the stars.
Scarecrow Making
Use old clothes and stuff them with hay or leaves to make a scarecrow in your backyard. It’s a fun way to embrace the fall spirit.
Leaf Rubbing Art or Leaf Printing dip
Collect different types of leaves and use them to create leaf-rubbing art. Place a leaf under a piece of paper and rub a crayon over it to reveal the leaf’s shape. In Leaf Printing you dip leaves in paint and press them onto paper to create leaf prints. It’s a creative and artistic activity that kids will enjoy.
Backyard Sports
Organize a friendly sports game in the backyard, like soccer, frisbee, or a simple game of catch.
Birdwatching:
Grab some binoculars and a bird guidebook, and spend time spotting and identifying different bird species in your area.
DIY Obstacle Course:
Create an obstacle course in the yard using items like hula hoops, cones, and jump ropes for the kids to enjoy.
Star Gazing:
Wait for a clear night, lay out some blankets, and stargaze with the kids. Try to identify constellations and planets visible in the fall sky.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and spend quality time together as a family. These free fall activities in the backyard can create lasting memories and celebrate the beauty of the season.
All these activities are a blast to do with your kids, best of all they’re free. Looking for more fall fun? Check out these DIY Fall Wreath Tutorials to make your home Autumn Ready 🙂

I remember collecting leaves with my sons then making place mats by putting them between sheets of wax paper & crayon shavings where you iron them to melt them together.
