Common Roofing Issues: What They Are & How to Fix Them!

It’s very common and also very annoying for houses to have a roof that leaks. You expect your roof to last you at least 20 years before you need to do any repairs to it, but if you’re not putting together regular maintenance inspections of your roof, you’re going to find it difficult to know whether or not there are any issues. 

If you don’t fix the smallest of leaks, they can do a lot of damage in a very small amount of time. It’s important to know how to find and how to fix the typical roof leaks so that you’re not left with the house that’s falling apart and a budget that’s out of control. Let’s dive in.

How to find leaks in the roof

• Start by looking in the attic. If you’re worried about your roof leaking, then you should start by looking in the attic. Generally if you don’t have any LeafFilter gutter guards on your gutters, you’ll find that the buildup of debris has allowed water to back up into the roof cavity and therefore down through the walls of your attic. You should check for any dark spots, mold, or any wet insulation that could mean that there is water damage filtering in through the roof. Use a flashlight and go to every nook and cranny. Bring the bug spray if you’re afraid of spiders.
• Up the ladder, check the roof. You should check the attic first before you go up onto the roof. You want to find any pieces of missing roof, broken roof, or damaged roof. You should check the flashing to make sure that the seams and joints around that roof don’t have any holes in them. And you should look for any trash that is stuck in gutters and drains. This causes the water to build up and leak out as we mentioned earlier.

How to fix them

• Change out any damaged shingles. If you find any missing pieces of a broken roof, you can replace them quite easily. Lift up the shingles around the broken one and take it off, and then nail in a new one to match.
• Fix the flashing. If the flashing is broken, you may need to reseal it or get a new flashing. It’s easy enough to do on your own, but just make sure you have somebody with you if you’re going up a ladder. You can use roofing cement to put the new flashing on, just make sure all of the edges are tightly shut and sealed.
• Keep roofing vents closed. Leaks can also come from your roof vents. Make sure that you’re checking the seals around the vents and get new ones if they’re broken or if they’re old.
• Clean out your gutters. Before you add your new gutter guards on, make sure you’ve cleaned out your gutters and that the water flowing through them is draining seamlessly. Scoop out any leaves or dirt and use a drain scoop or a yard trial to do that.
