Dogs are a joy around the house but if you have one that has undesired behaviors it can be tough . That’s why I’ve put together a list of ways To Correct Undesired Behavior in Dogs.
How To Correct Undesired Behavior in Dogs
There is a significant difference between well-trained and well-behaved dogs. Your dog may be able to do a lot of tricks, but if he still routinely chews furniture or jumps on people, he is not well-behaved. Similarly, if he has perfect behavior but doesn’t know how to sit on command, he isn’t well-trained. Ideally, you want your dog to be both well-trained and well-behaved but it requires a lot of hard work and consistency on your part to do so. Here are five aspects to focus on so you can turn your pet into the perfect companion.
Barking Incessantly
Many dogs bark every time they hear someone at your door. Others tend to bark at night whether they are kept inside or outside and the noise may bother you or your neighbors while you are trying to sleep. One way to discourage your pet from barking is to invest in the best anti bark dog collar, which delivers a small shock to the dog every time he barks. If you choose to use this device, however, it is important to remember that it is only temporary and you still need to train your dog what he should do instead of barking. When people come to the door, teach your dog to lay down and play with his toys or sit patiently by the door until you answer it. While the collar is an effective tool for teaching your pet what not to do, he’ll still be confused if he isn’t shown how to act appropriately.
Jumping On People
Some dogs are so excited to meet new people that they jump on them. Others are shy and hesitate to approach visitors. Ideally, you want your dog to be calm but friendly so it is important to use positive reinforcement to teach him how to act appropriately. Every time your dog approaches strangers calmly, reward him with a treat, praise or a lot of love and pets.
Performing Tricks
There are both behavioral and performance tricks you can teach your dog. Commands such as sit, stay and lay down help your dog learn how to act appropriately while tricks such as shake, fetch and roll over are more for entertainment purposes. A dog that is responsive to both types of commands is well-trained so use positive reinforcement to encourage the behaviors you want.
Eating Too Quickly
Some dogs are impatient when it comes to mealtimes. This is especially true if your dog has ever been in a situation where food was scarce. He may even be food aggressive and lash out at people or other dogs that get too close during mealtime. Teach your pet that you always have plenty of food available but he must act appropriately to get it. You may also want to use a slow feed dog bowl to keep your pet from eating too quickly.
Chewing On Items
Although it is a common behavior for puppies, some dogs continue the bad habit of chewing into adulthood. You may find your favorite pair of shoes destroyed. We may even see marks on the furniture where your dog has been chewing. To correct this behavior, make sure your dog has access to plenty of items he can chew. Great ones are toys. Teach him that chewing on other items is unacceptable. However, removing those items from him and replacing them with a chew toy is best. You can also use positive reinforcement every time your companion chooses a toy to chew on instead of another item.
Final thoughts
Dogs that are obedient, responsive and well-behaved make wonderful family pets. Although the training process can be challenging, it is rewarding. Focus on correcting these five behaviors to train your new pet thoroughly.
