When it comes to having a hobby, have you thought about taking up one that your whole family can join in on? It’s important that you are spending as much time with your family as possible, and yet there are so many people who don’t because they have a busy work life, and then they have their own hobbies which can sometimes get in the way of their family life.
Ideally, you should try to avoid this as much as possible, as your family is only going to be young once and you want to try to make the most of this. You want to be able to look back and say that you spent as much time as possible with your family, forming a strong bond that will last forever, rather than just focusing on your own wants. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the fun hobbies that you should consider taking up with your family, so if you are interested in finding out more, keep reading.
Hiking
The first thing that we’re going to suggest is hiking. If there are any nice hiking trails near you, or any mountains (not too high), then it might be worth looking into this. But, before you can move onto hiking, you all need to get comfortable walking long distances on flat ground. You can’t just go from nothing to climbing up steep mountains or trails, as this is not going to work. It’s likely that you wouldn’t even get very far before you had to turn around and head home because everyone’s legs are hurting.
Spend some time building up your endurance as a family by going on long walks, and when you feel comfortable doing this and like everyone is ready, then you can start hiking. We highly recommend that you all have the correct hiking boots, as these can make all of the difference for your feet. Hiking can be tough, so you want to ensure that you give yourselves the best chance possible of being able to tackle your hiking trail.
Sports
Perhaps if you are quite an active family but you would rather play organized games rather than just heading out hiking, you can consider taking up one or more sports. Of course, it’s going to entirely depend on what is in your area, and the problem with this is that you’re unlikely to be able to do this as a family. The only way that you will be able to do it with all of you is if you don’t play seriously and you just do this in the park or your garden. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this in any way, shape or form, it just means that you won’t be able to compete against other people at any point.
Look into the different sports, and see which ones appeal to all of you. If you don’t want something that is a contact sport so as to be sure that the kids aren’t at risk of being hurt, then there are plenty of options. Talk to your family about it, and see if you can come to some kind of agreement.
Board Games
You might not think of board games as a hobby, but they absolutely can be. You can either play a range of board games, or you can focus on one, it’s up to you. Most families tend to go for multiples so that they don’t get bored of doing the same thing all of the time, but there are exceptions to this that we will talk about in a minute.
We recommend buying a whole range of board games, and then you can spend a couple of nights per week together seeing which ones you like, which ones you don’t, which ones you’re good at, and which ones you’re not. It can provide you with hours upon hours of fun, and you will get to spend this time bonding with your family which is fantastic.
As we said, there are some exceptions to this, and one of those is chess. Chess is something that you have to master over time, and if your whole family enjoys playing, then this is a massive bonus. You can all play with each other, learn the different strategies, and so much more. Who will be the champion? You’ll have to keep playing to find out.
Art
If you want to do something that is more on the creative side of things, then art is always a good option to consider. Now, when you hear the word art and associate it with kids, you’re more than likely to think of painting. Painting is cool, but if it’s not for you then you don’t have to force yourself as there are so many different mediums that you’re bound to find one that you can all enjoy. It might take a little while, and you might all end up doing different ones, but that’s okay as long as you are doing it together.
Some people find that art can be quite an expensive hobby depending on which area you want to do, but there are always ways to make it a little cheaper. Look into deals and discounts, find stores online that sell things for cheap and so on. It doesn’t have to cost you a fortune to have fun and bond with your family.
Video Games
This one is quite controversial so feel free to skip past this if it’s not for you. But, video games can be a fantastic hobby. Now, we’re not suggesting that you and your kids spend all of your time staring at a screen and playing games, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be a good hobby. As long as your kids aren’t talking to anyone online which can be extremely dangerous, then we don’t see the harm in playing games. In fact, there has been research conducted that has come up with a whole list of benefits of video games, and they are worth looking into.
There are so many different video games out there, and they are not all first person shooters or horror games the way the media makes out that they are. Before you decide that it’s not for you, you should definitely at least look into it and do some proper research.
Cooking/Baking
Have you thought about cooking or baking as your hobby? Yes, we know that they are two different things, but we’re putting them in the same subtitle because the basics are the same. Whereas baking is more to do with creating treats and sweet things, cooking is more savory and meal options. You might think that you hate cooking, but is that because it’s something that you have to do every day as opposed to wanting to? If so, it might be that you don’t hate cooking at all, and if you try it in a less pressured environment, you actually might quite enjoy it.
Kids tend to love baking. They love creating sweet treats and desserts that they can munch on, and a lot of adults actually find it quite calming. It’s definitely worth having a look into baking or cooking, seeing if you can get into it or not. If not, no worries, but you might discover a new love.
Dance
The final hobby that we are going to look at is dance. This is another active hobby, and it might be one that a lot of parents immediately shake their head at and say that they have no interest in doing. That’s completely fine, but you shouldn’t dismiss it so fast because it can be a great source of physical exercise, and can be a lot of fun. You might feel silly at first, but you can get used to that and the longer that you do it, the less silly you are going to feel.
Dance is also something that your kids are likely to really enjoy, so it’s worth giving it a shot. You never know, this could be the thing that your family needs and you didn’t even know it. You can look into local dance classes, or you can just do it in your living room, whatever makes you feel more comfortable.
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the fun hobbies that you should consider taking up with your family. At the end of the day, it can be really difficult to find a hobby that you all enjoy, but hopefully if you persevere, then this is exactly what you will be able to do. It might take a bit of time, and it might take a lot of trial and error, but we are sure that you will get there in the end if you want to. We wish you the very best of luck, and hope that you manage to find something that you can all enjoy sooner rather than later, as the sooner you find it, the longer you get to do it.
