Are you looking for ways to Encourage Your Child’s Passions and Interests? Here are some great tips to help you achieve this.
How to Encourage Your Child’s Passions and Interests
A new survey of 2,000 Americans has revealed that almost half are working in their dream jobs; those that allow them to take part in passions they have had since they were children. That’s great news because most of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work. It is also something worth considering when you’re raising kids. If your kids already have a passion—whether it’s dancing, painting, creating crafts, sewing, or writing—give them all the chances they need to make their hobbies more meaningful, varied, and passion-filled.
Helping Your Child Set SMART Goals
Say your child is a talented scuba diver or a maestro at whipping up delicious meals. To keep them motivated and encourage them to perfect their craft, consider teaching them how to set SMART goals. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. An example of a SMART goal is, “I will learn to cook a spinach soufflé before the end of the month,” or “I will obtain my PADI® Open Water Diver (scuba diving) certificate this summer.” Setting goals keeps your child motivated to stick to their passions and reach a point where they are adding their own talent and creativity to the activities they love carrying out.
Harnessing the Power of Social Media
Children in the US spend an average of 4.8 hours daily on social media such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Encourage them to follow interesting influencers in their areas of interest. If they’re interested in baking, for instance, then they may enjoy following talented pastry chefs like Jane’s Pâtisserie or Tieghan Gerard. If they are into sports such as baseball, teach them how to bookmark blogs focused on the life stories of famous baseball players, soccer stars, or basketball icons. Influencers can shed light on top trends, techniques, and other information that can help your child advance in their area of interest.
Helping Your Child Form Part of a Community
There are few things that are more motivating for children than meeting other people their age who share their passion. Consider signing your child up for group activities in their area of interest. For instance, if they love baking, sign them up for a one-week cookie or muffing-baking course. If they are into sports, check out if there are any summer camps centered on their activity. You, too, can be part of their community by taking an interest in their passions and helping them find useful articles, videos, and social media uploads they might like. If you can, try out the activities that ignite their passion; you never know, you may also find a new hobby that taps into your creative, sporty, or technological talents.
If your child is lucky enough to have defined their passion early in life, there are many ways that you can encourage them to delve deeper into their interests. One is to help them set goals, so their interests continue to challenge them. Another is to help them find influencers that inspire them to be their best. Finally, help your child feel surrounded by like-minded individuals, and remember that you can be one of them!
