Start by taking a look through some interior design blogs and magazines with your children by your side so that they can get a feel for what they could potentially be looking out for their own bedrooms. It may not just be a case of switching out the colors on the walls, but changing out the furniture as well. So you want to ensure that you are choosing pieces that they actually care about having, especially if your children are old enough to make these decisions. It’s not the same as when you decorate a nursery, because everything that you put into the nursery has nothing really to do with the baby and everything to do with your own sense of style. But as children get older, they develop what their own styles are too, so you have to get them involved.
• Start small. If you want to start planning the decoration for your kids room, start with the small things, not the big things. For example, you may want to come up with a theme together so that you can build your decor around the theme rather than the other way around. You want to ensure that you have a bedroom that stands out to your child’s personality, so think about the things like the colour of the curtains, or the rugs, or which posters they want to have on the walls, or which decals to use. When you come up with the theme together, you can bloom your ideas from there.
• Shop around. Once you’ve come up with the right theme, start shopping around for furniture and theme related things for their bedroom in different places. You do not have to go into one store and immediately walk out with an entire bedroom’s worth of stuff for your kid. You do need to think about your budget and what you can afford and go from there.
